The Pisces Lunar Eclipse: Where Clarity Meets Compassion

Today I want to explore the upcoming Pisces lunar eclipse with you: what it means, how to align with it, what might unfold, and how you can energetically prepare yourself to connect with this energy. I also want to offer some compassion for what's been arising over the last couple of weeks, because it's been a lot.

We've been sitting inside what's called an eclipse portal for the last two to three weeks, and it has been a potent window. I don't know about you, but my own life has gone through the classic eclipse experience: things getting brought to the surface, flipped upside down. If you were with me a couple of weeks ago for my talk on the solar eclipse, you'll remember I said this can be a tumultuous time. And it has been, for me and for the people I work with. With this lunar eclipse, though, we're coming to closure.

That doesn't mean everything suddenly snaps back to normal and we just carry on. It means the amplification and intensification of the last few weeks is going to start to integrate. There will be more clarity, more understanding, more awareness about why certain things have happened, and what we need to do to support ourselves and to invite more ease and flow into our lives.

When it's happening

This lunar eclipse falls on the full moon. I live in Peru, so it'll be peaking here around 11pm. Depending on where you are in the world, it might land in the early morning, mid-morning, or midday for you on the 28th, so just do a quick Google search for the exact time in your time zone.

The peak of an eclipse can be an incredibly potent time to feel the energy directly. During the solar eclipse a couple of weeks ago, it hit at midday here, and even though I had a full list of work planned, I felt the energy so powerfully that I put it all down, went outside, and sat in meditation instead. I decided not to fight the astrology, just to surrender and let it move through me. A lunar eclipse can offer the same invitation. Many of us will be asleep for the peak, but if you happen to be awake, go outside and take a look. It's genuinely beautiful, and if you've never seen one before, it's worth staying up for.

What actually happens in the sky

At a full moon, the sun sits opposite the moon and reflects its light onto her, so she appears full, bright, and brilliant. But during a lunar eclipse, the Earth moves directly between the sun and the moon. Over a couple of hours, you'll watch the bright full moon slowly begin to darken: first dimming, then turning this spectacular deep red-orange. You can genuinely feel it in your body, chills and all. Then, as the Earth moves out of the way, the moon slowly returns to her brilliant white-gold light.

This is deeply symbolic. The moon, at her brightest, moves into a darker version of herself, and then returns to the light. It's a death-and-rebirth cycle, playing out in real time above us.

Reclaiming the darkness

If you've been to my talks before, you'll have heard me speak about the new moon and full moon cycle this way: the new moon, at her darkest, is the death, the feminine's journey into the underworld. We tend to associate "dark" with scary, unknown, bad. But that's a really limited view. Darkness is simply the mystery: what we haven't come to understand yet.

Think about walking into an unfamiliar, pitch-black room. You don't know what's ahead, so there's a natural caution. But that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with that space, it just means we're no longer in control. When the light comes on, we can navigate, we feel a sense of control, we're not afraid of tripping over something unseen. That's why we associate light with "good." But really, darkness is about how much capacity we have to surrender, to be okay with not knowing. And light is about how well we can use the clarity we're given to move forward.

Darkness is the realm of the great mystery, and that makes it deeply spiritual territory. Most of the universe is unknown to us, just like the depths of the ocean. It can feel intimidating and out of control, and yet it holds so much potential: beauty, depth, magic, untapped energy, inspiration, resources, gifts we haven't discovered yet. We don't know what's coming in our lives. Yes, there will be challenge and difficulty, but hopefully also the moment we meet the love of our life, or a best friend, or step into healing, inspiration, or the return of a passion we thought we'd lost. All of that lives in the realm of mystery too.

So I really want to invite a rewrite of "light is good, dark is bad," because it's simply not true. One is familiar, one is unfamiliar, and the unfamiliar asks us to trust our intuition and inner guidance instead of our eyes.

During a lunar eclipse, this plays out directly: there is light, clarity, understanding, and then slowly, the great mystery moves in. Surprises arrive. The unpredictable shows up. The moon, who is symbolic of the yin, the feminine, the dark, returns briefly to her natural state, and archetypally, this is when hidden parts of ourselves rise to the surface. Because it happens quickly (unlike the several days of a new moon), these energetics can land in our lives suddenly and dramatically.

This is exactly what I described with the solar eclipse a few weeks ago: the sun going dark for a short window and then returning to light. We thought we were on one path, we had our vision, we were planning around it. Then great mystery moved in, shook things up, and rocked our world. As the light returns, we're asked to look honestly at what's been revealed: a pattern, a belief system, a relationship, an identity, something about our work or lifestyle that was hidden and has now come into view. Something we can't unsee. It might be a gift we need to cultivate, or something that's been quietly holding us back. Either way, it gets loud.

We're not quite at that "clarity" phase yet, that will land in the hours and days after the eclipse peaks, sometime on the 28th onward. That's when the insight starts to settle: this is why these things have been happening, this is what's going on. It can be humbling. It can be hard to have these honest conversations with ourselves. But there is real wisdom waiting in these moments.

Why eclipses feel so loud: the lunar nodes

Eclipses happen when the sun or moon is close to the lunar nodes, two of the most important points in evolutionary astrology, the branch of astrology I practice. The south node speaks to our past-life karma, our conditioning, the programming and belief systems we've carried into this lifetime (if you work with past lives, and if not, simply the imprinting a soul brings into this body, our "nature" as opposed to our "nurture"). The north node sits directly opposite in every chart and speaks to our soul's evolutionary growth point, the direction we're meant to be growing into. For many of us, the north node feels a little unfamiliar, even edgy, that darkness again, a part of our soul's journey we haven't mastered yet. But the more we embody it, the more clarity and direction we find on our path.

During an eclipse, because the sun and moon are sitting right on these node points, our karmic patterns and the direction we're meant to be moving in become impossible to avoid. And then the real question arrives: what are you going to do about it? We can bury our heads in the sand, keep making the same choices, and hope it quiets down. Sometimes it will, sometimes it won't, depending on what else is going on for you. Left unaddressed, the pattern just keeps festering and getting louder. Or, we can meet what's surfaced and say: I may love this, I may really dislike it, but there's a lesson here, and choose a different path.

This eclipse's particular signature: Virgo clarity, Pisces surrender

This eclipse carries extra weight because the sun and Mercury are currently in Virgo, while the moon is in Pisces.

Virgo is the sign of discernment and honesty. It uses the mind as a tool for clarity, not for self-deception, it wants to get straight to the heart of the matter and see what needs to change. It's the master craftsperson, the sign of self-mastery, discipline, and commitment. With the sun there, the message is clear: we can't keep pretending things are fine when they're not. We need Virgo's clarity about what actually needs to shift. Mercury, which rules Virgo, amplifies this even further: pay attention to your mind, your thoughts, your belief systems, your inner narrative. What's actually going on in your consciousness? Can you rewrite it?

And because Virgo is a sign of discipline, it's also telling us: this isn't going to be instant. If you've carried a belief that you're unlovable for 45 years, ten affirmations won't dissolve it overnight. Virgo asks us to show up for ourselves consistently, again and again. The good news is that the changes don't need to be huge. Small, sustainable changes beat drastic ones you abandon in a few weeks.

I see this in my own life constantly. I love exercise, and I go through phases of being deeply committed, and then life happens (travel, moving around the world, teaching yoga trainings) and it disappears for months. What I've learned is that consistency is what actually creates change. Three intense months of exercise won't give you a strong body for life; a little bit, done consistently over years, will. It's the same with meditation: three hours a day for a month, then nothing, and in three years you'll be back where you started. Ten minutes a day, sustained for years, changes your life. That's what Virgo is asking of us: honest self-reflection, and then disciplined, devoted integration.

At the same time, we have the Pisces moon, bringing surrender, softening, release, intuition, connection to the higher self, magic, wonder, bliss. So while Virgo says "we can't just wave a wand and it disappears," Pisces says "and yet, stay open to miracles, to divine healing, inspiration, love, compassion, and forgiveness." Something that's felt hard and tight for a long time can soften, seemingly out of nowhere.

This pairing is a gift, because Virgo's shadow is harshness: perfectionism, rigidity, self-criticism. It can tell us we're worthless if we're not exercising an hour a day, meditating an hour a day, hiking an hour a day, on top of work and family and everything else. There aren't enough hours. Pisces steps in and says: we need compassion here too. If you commit to something and mess it up, can you love yourself through that? If you're not where you want to be yet, can you love yourself through that?

Virgo and Pisces are, in many ways, our two most spiritual signs. Virgo through devotional, embodied service, Pisces through meditation, mysticism, dreams, and surrender to the divine. Together they're saying: yes, see clearly what needs to change, and also love yourself exactly as you are right now. Can you hold both the discipline to move forward and the compassion to accept where you presently stand, the beauty and the shadow, the parts of you that are silly or annoying or self-sabotaging, right alongside the parts that are wise and loving? Pisces dissolves the boundary between them. Evolution doesn't mean becoming perfect, it means embracing all of it. This is hard, beautiful work, and it's the essence of this eclipse.

How long does this last?

A great question came in during the live version of this talk: does all this revelation happen only during the eclipse itself, or does it continue to unfold? Short answer: it depends. Some of what's stirred up will resolve within this eclipse window, the roughly 30 to 35 days we're coming to the end of now. Some of it will unfold across the full lunar cycle. And if the eclipse is activating an active transit in your personal chart, it can go on much longer.

A transit is what's happening in the sky right now, activating your natal chart, the map you were born with, showing what you're here to learn, heal, and cultivate. We don't have to do all of it at once (thankfully); different parts of the chart get activated at different times, and on average, people are moving through somewhere between six and fifteen transits at once. Some last a couple of weeks or months; others run for up to three years. If an eclipse lands on a transit that's underway, it can either kick that transit off or bring it to a close.

I experienced this myself a couple of years ago, moving through a long transit between Chiron and my natal Mars, about two years of burnout while I was deep in building our house. Right around when that transit should have technically ended, an eclipse hit that exact point in my chart. I remember going to sleep saying, please, please, may this just end. And it did, almost to the day. I woke up and felt my energy and vitality return after a year and a half of burnout.

For a specific look at how this eclipse is landing on your own chart, I offer transit readings and the more in-depth progressions and solar arc readings on my website. In general terms: the nodes are currently at 29 degrees of Aquarius and Leo, so if you have planets in the last five degrees (25 to 29 degrees) of Aquarius, Leo, Taurus, or Scorpio, this is activating that part of your chart directly, and the same is true for the last five degrees of Libra and Gemini. Meanwhile, the moon will be at 4 degrees Pisces and the sun and Mercury at 4 degrees Virgo, so any planets you have in the first ten degrees of Virgo, Pisces, Sagittarius, or Gemini are also being lit up. It's worth looking up what those specific planets mean for you, that will give real clues about what's been activated and where to focus your attention.

For me, it's my Venus in Gemini. Venus speaks to the feminine, creativity, values, and relationship to money, and (as someone who identifies as a woman) to my body and physical health too. Gemini rules the throat, voice, communication, and expression, which is central to my work. I've had ongoing throat challenges for several years, and in the last two weeks of this eclipse portal, I finally got to the doctor and got real clarity on what's physically going on, after years of trying to figure it out. It came with real physical discomfort and worry, but also enormous relief. And now it's my choice whether I put in the work to actually heal what's come up.

How to work with this energy

Pisces communicates through intuition, the heart, our dreams, our connection to the invisible, not through the logical, rational mind. So some of the clarity and guidance available right now won't arrive in an obvious, literal way. It'll come through your inner knowing.

This is a potent time to meditate, to breathe deeply, to open your creativity through painting, drawing, dancing, anything that gets you into flow and out of the logical mind and into the heart. Pay attention to your dreams. Some of you may already feel you know exactly what's being asked of you. Others are still waiting for the answer, and this window is a strong one for that clarity to arrive.

Pisces also works closely with healing. You may find yourself wanting or needing a lot of it right now. Whatever you connect to, universal oneness, unconditional love, God, goddess, divine healing energy, angels, spirit guides, working with that benevolent energy, held with the highest good of yourself and others in mind, can be genuinely powerful right now. Some nights I simply go to sleep and say: angels, spirit guides, I'm here, I'm open, please help me, please heal me, come to me in my dreams, offer me the clarity I'm ready to receive. It's remarkable what happens when we open ourselves to receive. So let yourself open to the magic, the mystery, the miracles, alongside the practical, logical steps you're taking toward change.

This is a genuinely powerful time, so be gentle with yourselves. Be honest about what needs to shift, and just as importantly, be compassionate about where you are right now. Drink plenty of water. Pisces loves water, and staying hydrated helps attune our energy, especially since we're mostly water ourselves, and water is such an incredible transmitter of energy.
